Our group is a cross-disciplinary team cover chemistry, materials and microbial technology, combining basic research with application of technology, to solve real environmental problems. In the meantime, by binding the technical standards and products, our group plays a leading role in technology development, providing good environment purification materials and technical solutions for water treatment and heavy metal pollution remediation. Since 2000, Profess Li has directed more than 30 issues of Ministry of Science and Technology, Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, UNEP, UN-HABITAT, and industrial companies. Our group has published 200 papers at home and abroad, including more than 100 papers of SCI, more than 20 patents inventions have authorized.

Our group had gained several achievements in the fields of wastewater treatment, the closure of water-soluble dye hair regiment, synthetic mechanism of some biodegradable water treatment agents——Polyaspartic acid（PASP），Polyepoxysuccinic acid(PESA). Most of the industrial products have taken the lead in the domestic market. The new types Successful Product had been used in Shandong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Henan, Hebei, Anhui, Liaoning, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Hainan, which are: iron series coagulant, printing and dyeing waste water decoloring agents, silicon polymer ferric chloride aluminum coagulants, high purity aluminium polymerization, enhanced aluminium polymerization, enhanced primary treatment of coagulant,PESA,PASP, none-phosphorus corrosion inhibitor, reverse osmosis special scale inhibitor, aluminium polymerization rapid subsidence agent etc. They have been proved to create good economic and social benefits. Recently our group expands to nano-functional adsorbent material, which is applied in heavy metals pollutant and sewage advanced treatment, as well as heavy metal remediation of contaminated sites, achieving effective results.

In 2015， based on the previous study of adsorption performance and adsorption mechanism of novel porous materials, Professor Li and his team made further research on the preparation and synthetic route of the typical porous material, Which will lay a solid foundation for the ultimate realization of the oriented design and scale production of the environmental functional materials. Related research work including using different metal resource for the preparation of MIL-53 (Al)-materials, preparation of MIL-53(Al) material decorated by a nanoscale-thin layer of highly crystalline anatase TiO2, and a method for MOF deposition on “inert” polymer surfaces to fabricated hierarchically structured porous films have been published in some international top journals (Chemistry-A European Journal, Chemical Communications, etc.). In addition, a newly developed nano functional material ZIF-8 has been used to adsorb trace heavy metals arsenic (As) in water, the adsorption quantity under low concentration (10μg/L) reached the peak of reported literature 76.5 mg/g. In addition, his team applied the footprints methodology for better understanding of how WWTPs interact with the hydrologic cycle, energy resources and climate, which is helpful and important for the design of future WWTPs.

Our group also took environmental policy research. For example, with HSBC and Bayer's support, the first published report about urban reducing carbon dioxide emissions in order to tackle climate change released in 2006 and "Shanghai carbon dioxide emissions to address climate change report" (published by Science Press )， officially published in 2009. In 2011, our group with UNEP and UN-Habitat jointly issued typical African Urban Water Report "green mountains, blue City: Urban Water Management in Africa in an ecosystem approach." During the global Conference on sustainable development in Rio + 20, the UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP, Mr. Steiner, Executive Director of UNEP jointly issued Chinese version of "green economy report." The "Green Campus Guide." is published in 2014. In March 2015, during the Cairo Conference of African Ministers of the Environment, "China - UNEP - Africa Water Action results report" is published. In June 2015, the teaching material "green economy" is published.

With the support of UNEP, UN-HABITAT and the support of the Ministry of Science and technology, our group has done some research about climate change and water resource in Africa. Our group has made effort to promoted green urban planning in Africa countries, helped training water management officials and technical personnel and popularized the new technology of applicability water treatment. Besides, our team has established extensive green cities and water treatment cooperation network and established some demonstration projects.
